Wheat imports have now stopped
“The government is not satisfied with wheat imports and has halted imports
for the time being,” said Waliullah Faryadars, director general of the
Ministry of Agriculture’s Bureau of Trade and Regulatory Affairs about wheat imports
this year.
He added that the evidence suggests that some of the wheat produced in the
country has not been sold to the government, adding that since wheat is a very
strategic commodity for the country, we use strategic reserves if there is
concern. This makes us move towards imports.
The Director General of the Office of Trade and Regulations of the Ministry of
Agriculture Jihad continued: To date, no definitive decision has been made on
wheat imports because the government body is not satisfied with the product we
were self-sufficient.
Possibility of buying wheat stored by the private sector
Responding to the government’s intention to collect wheat stored in warehouses
by the private sector, he said: “This is a solution and we haven’t thought
about it, though a state-owned company might have thought of it.”
“If the product is imported into the country, the currency will definitely
be 4200 T because it is a staple,” Faryadras said.
He added: Last year we had no wheat imports and only a small amount of wheat
was imported into our country as a temporary import and exported to neighboring
countries for processing and export.
