Two Panamax ships carrying Russian wheat will leave Iran for a major port next week , according to a source .
An official from the federation of Iranian food industry organizations said in October that it plans to import 5 million tonnes of wheat this year.
Ali Akbar Mhrfrd, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Tehran last month announced a memorandum of understanding with Russia and Kazakhstan for import temporary wheat has signed.
“We have to see how much wheat is delivered because financial transfers with Iran are still very difficult,” said one wheat trader about the latest Iranian purchases.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has been separated from the global financial system under US sanctions, but the supply of food, medicine and other humanitarian products, including animal feed, have been exempt.
The US is targeting everything from oil sales to shipping and financial activities, which has led many foreign banks to worry about trading with Iran, even in humanitarian transactions such as sending food.
More than four ships carrying about one million tonnes of grain were stranded outside Iran’s borders in October because US sanctions created difficulties in payment and hampered Iran’s efforts to import vital goods.
Multinationals do not appear to be wheat sellers in recent transactions. Two businessmen in the Middle East and an Asian business are said to be responsible for the sales.
According to one trader, the source of the shipment is one million tons of wheat, Russia and other areas of the Black Sea.
“If the payment problem is resolved, it is likely that 5,000 tonnes of wheat will enter Iran from Germany. There are also problems with the Russian wheat pest. “
Most of these purchases were made by Iran’s state-owned specialist commercial trading company and several private buyers receive these shipments through the Caspian Sea.
