Discovering a dangerous additive
Researchers at Harvard University discovered a dangerous additive in bread.
Propionate, which is added to prevent the melting of bread, increases the risk of obesity and diabetes at the hormonal level, according to Science Translational Medicine.
In experiments performed on mice, increased levels of glucagon, norapinephrine and fatty acids of FABP4 were recorded. The researchers achieved the same result in the 14-volunteer experiment, which was supplemented with propionate (one gram per meal). The rest of the diet consumed placebo. Volunteers tested before eating and 15 minutes after eating and a few hours later. The level of hormone causing metabolic impairment was high in the group that consumed food containing propionate
