3 new varieties of wheat and barley

With the efforts of the young researchers of the Gonbad-e-Kavos Agricultural Research Station for 10 years, two new barley cultivars named Fardan and Behdan and a new wheat cultivar, named Aseman were introduced to the farmers.

In the ceremony of introducing these new cultivars at Gonbad-e-Kavos Agricultural Research Station, on the occasion of the farm’s day, leading farmers and field experts from wheat and barley fields of the East of Golestan became familiar with these figures and features.

The new wheat and barley varieties, which are special for dry lands, are premature and resistant to drought stress and pests and diseases, and from other cultivars, they produce more than 200-500 kilograms of wheat per hectare.

The researcher at the Agricultural Research Station in Gonbad-Kavoos and a member of the Golestan Agricultural Research Center, who scored new barley figures, said: “These figures are the result of 10 years of research work that began cultivating since the previous year.”

Rahmatollah Mohammadi added: Premature, resistant to drought stresses and pests and diseases, especially in countering end-of-season tensions, is one of the characteristics of these figures.

He added: “Behdan is the earliest, and will grow one to two weeks earlier than the current cultivars, and therefore the possible tensions of the end of the growing season will be safe.”

He mentioned the increase in weight of 1000 seeds compared to other cultivars and increased production from 200 to 300 kg per hectare, and high tolerance to dehydration, and pests and diseases were among the most important features of Behdan.

The researcher at the Agricultural Research Station of Gonbad-e-Kavus, on the characteristics of Fardan cultivar, also said that in addition to its early characteristics, it has the advantage of being resistant to pests and diseases and the stem elongation (between 100 and 105 cm).

Mohammadi added: The use of stored food in the stem would increase the weight of the seeds and thus increase the production to 500 kilograms more than two varieties of Mahoor and Khorram per hectare.

Hassan Qawjq, another researcher at the Gonbad-e-Kavus Agricultural Research Station, who spent 10 years on a new wheat cultivar, said: “The new heavier variety is suitable for rainy land with an annual rainfall of at least 200 mm, especially low-yielding areas of the northern areas of this city.”

He has a high stem height (95 to 130 cm) to store photosynthetic food for use in drought stress conditions at the end of the growing season. During grazing, grain weight stabilization, early clustering and cluster lengths with a capacity of 45 seeds are the most important features of the new variety called Aseman. In addition, the resistance to drought stresses, especially at the end of the growing season, is one of the other benefits of the Aseman, adding that the average harvest of this figure in areas with 200 mm of annual rainfall is at least 3 tons in other areas with rainfall of up to 400 mm in a year above 5 tons.

Director of Agricultural Jihad, Gonbad Kavoas, said: “These three cultivars will be cultivated in the coming years.”

Gholamali Noora added: Golestan Agricultural Research Station in the past 40 years has introduced 79 wheat products, which has been welcomed and used by farmers.
